The Archetype

You are here to birth a unique body of work. This is the gift of the Transmitter.

The Latin root of transmission, transmittere, means “to send across,” “to pass through” or “to let through.” You are both a receiver and a sender, an antenna for the collective. You are attuned to questions, teachings and ways of seeing that humanity needs to navigate through this collective rite of passage.

The transmission passes through the imprint and particular conditions of your life, which is why its frequency is unique to you yet resonates with so many others. The body of work is what takes shape between receiving and sending.

Receiving the Curriculum

The word curriculum comes from the Latin curriculum, meaning “a running or a course,” rooted in currere, “to run.” The same roots give us curriculum vitae, literally “the course of one's life.” Your life has been your curriculum in this original sense. The path you have traveled, and everything it has asked you to learn, has become a course of study no single school or training could have designed for you.

You take learning seriously. You may have studied with elders, apprenticed within a lineage, completed more professional trainings than you can count or immersed yourself in scientific research, books and formal education. You honor the foundations laid by others, allowing what you receive from them to become part of the larger curriculum unfolding through your life.

You might also receive through contemplation, flow states, dreams, grief, beauty, silence and sustained attention to the living world. At times, what comes through arrives with such coherence that you may know the experience as receiving a download: a phrase, image, idea or entire framework that appears before you have consciously worked it out.

Sacred plant medicines may be central to this part of your process. In ceremony, what feels like a complete set of instructions may arrive all at once: an idea, process or blueprint that might otherwise have taken years to reach through ordinary thought.

However the transmission arrives, your body helps you recognize it. Like a tuning fork responding to vibration, you feel the resonance of inspiration and sense how it wants to move through you.

You also tend to thrive at the leading edge of emergent fields of study, where the books you need have not yet been written. You follow the existing work as far as it can take you, until you reach the limits of what has already been mapped. The current frameworks can no longer fully explain the insights you are receiving or support you in the ways you need to survive, heal, make meaning or expand what you believe is possible.

Like the Wayfinder, you are willing to keep going when the existing map ends. If the Wayfinder is one of your secondary archetypes, you may sense the direction of the work long before you can explain how you will get there.

Eventually, you realize what you may have intuitively known all along... the curriculum I need does not exist yet.

Distilling What Life Has Taught You

You refuse to accept what is currently available as the limit of what can be created. Receiving is only the beginning. You stay with what has arrived long enough to understand what it's asking of you, test it through your own experience, document what actually helps and begin developing the curriculum you wish you had been able to find.

At the center of your body of work is a question or teaching that remains on your altar for years or even decades. Each book, practice, framework, program or creative expression develops or reveals another part of that inquiry. Over time, you begin to see how each piece belongs to the larger contribution taking form through your life.

When other people begin working with what you have created, their experience shows you where the teaching is clear, where it breaks down, where refinement is needed, and what you haven't yet considered.

As the work develops, you become a creator of language and methodology. You give people words for experiences they have felt but have not known how to name. The right word or concept gives them something to grasp, making it easier to recognize what's happening and work with it more intentionally. You then translate what you have learned into a process they can actually follow.

Synthesis is often part of how you do this: you draw from fields other people keep separate, bringing them together in an original framework shaped by the particular life you have lived. If the Synthesizer is one of your secondary archetypes, this cross-disciplinary thinking may be one of the strongest foundations of your work.

Sending the Transmission Forward

The curriculum you once needed becomes a curriculum other people can learn from, practice and carry into their own lives. It may become a book, methodology, school, training pathway, body of writing, work of art or series of teachings developed over decades.

Your transmission may move through your voice, your hands, the movement of your body, your writing and your presence.

If music is your medium, you understand that transmission is not limited to the spoken word. Melody, rhythm and vibration can help people move through grief, express devotion or preserve memory across generations. Your transmission may take shape as a song, album, composition or body of music that grows across your lifetime.

You may consider yourself a frequency carrier, sensing that part of what you transmit moves through your presence as much as through your words. Certain landscapes, temples, pilgrimage routes or sacred sites may change the quality of what you receive, and you may feel called to teach, create or record from those places. Your relationship with the place becomes part of the transmission. This asks for reverence: learn the protocols of the site and respect the people and traditions who care for it.

Whatever the medium, people can sense the difference between receiving information and experiencing a transmission. They may feel the teaching before they fully understand it because your embodiment is part of what you transmit. Resonance cannot be contrived or manufactured. It is felt in the alignment between who you are, the path you walk and what you teach.

The Work as Sacred Practice

The body of work you are creating is also creating you in return. It influences the practices you devote yourself to, the way you structure your days and, at times, the entire architecture of your life. Your desk, studio or wherever you return to create becomes your altar of devotion.

Your body of work becomes your body of worship. The daily practice of showing up becomes a form of sacred prayer, and each new expression of the work becomes another offering.

A teaching does not end with the person who first brings it through. It enters other lives, influences what those people create and may continue developing long after its original teacher is gone. Some teachings require an entire lifetime to bring through, and then another lifetime to carry them further. Someone may discover your work decades after you are gone and develop it in directions you could never have imagined. There is something deeply humbling and wildly inspiring about knowing that your lifetime may be only one chapter in the much longer life of your work.

Your task is to bring through what is yours in this lifetime. Where the work travels after that belongs to the people who receive it.

02

Your Role in the Great Turning

Joanna Macy describes the Great Turning as the transition from an industrial growth society to a life-sustaining society. She names three mutually reinforcing dimensions of this transition: Holding Actions, Building Life-Sustaining Systems and Shifting Consciousness.

Your primary contribution is Shifting Consciousness.

You give insight a form people can encounter, practice and share. Through teaching and transformative experience, you help people understand their lives and therefore live them differently.

A shift in consciousness cannot be sustained by a single catalytic experience. People need language they can return to, practices they can repeat and teachings that deepen as their capacity grows. Your body of work gives the shift enough structure to become part of a life.

When the body of work becomes a curriculum, school, training lineage, or durable communal practice, it also contributes to Building Life-Sustaining Systems.

This is cultural transmission at the scale of the Great Turning. What began as an insight moving through one person becomes shared knowledge that a community can work with and continue developing.

03

The Shadow Side

The Sacrificed Vessel

The shadow begins when you assume that because the work came through you, every job required to carry it must also be yours.

The One-Person Institution

Developing a curriculum is one role in bringing a body of work into the world. Teaching it, helping the right students find it, managing enrollment, writing emails, supporting the community, maintaining the platform and running the organization are separate roles with their own demands. If you try to fill every role yourself, you become the bottleneck.

Part of your mastery is allowing other people to support you and eventually help carry the work. This may mean trusting someone else with the administration, documenting the methodology so another facilitator can teach it or allowing students to grow into stewards of the work. Letting go can feel vulnerable because no one will carry it exactly as you do. But if every decision still depends on you, the work stops whenever you do.

The work is never finished. There is always another teaching to refine, another email to write or another student who needs support. Because the mission matters so much, you can convince yourself that your body, relationships, rest and play can wait.

You can also become fused with the work until its reception begins to feel like a measure of your worth. A poorly attended program, a rejected book proposal or a teaching that does not land can feel like a verdict on both your value and the legitimacy of what you received.

Endless Apprenticeship

Your hunger for knowledge can keep you in a permanent state of preparation and accumulation. You take one more training, earn another certification and continue gathering material because you still do not trust that Life has already taught you enough to begin. You may be wildly over-certified and still believe someone else needs to authorize what you know.

Learning itself can become a hiding place. At some point, more education stops deepening the work and starts delaying the moment when you claim your authority, say what you think and let the work meet reality.

The Unintegrated Revelation

A powerful download can feel divine, coherent and unquestionably true. Yet even when you have stepped out of the way to receive, you are still interpreting what arrives through your own psychology, experiences and blind spots. Intensity is not evidence, and “this came through me” does not place an idea beyond attribution, feedback or correction. A revelation may change your life in a single night. Turning it into a trustworthy teaching requires humility, testing and time.

As the teaching grows, complexity can become another form of protection. When people cannot understand or apply it, you may decide they were not ready. Sometimes that's true. Other times, the curriculum needs clearer language, a better sequence or more honest contact with the people it is meant to serve.

Watch for:

  • Trying to be the curriculum developer, teacher, enrollment coordinator, community manager, administrator and entire operations team.
  • Refusing to delegate or train other people because you fear the work will become diluted.
  • Sacrificing your body, relationships or capacity for joy because the work feels too important to pause.
  • Treating the reception or rejection of the work as a verdict on your worth or the legitimacy of what you received.
  • Gathering more training and credentials to postpone trusting what you know.
  • Mistaking the intensity of a download for proof that it is true, ready to teach or beyond correction.
  • Making the teaching so complex that people cannot enter it, then assuming they were not ready rather than asking what needs to become clearer.

A school, methodology or lineage cannot depend on one person doing everything forever.

Your body is not an obstacle standing between you and the work. It is the instrument through which the work becomes possible. Care for it accordingly.

05

TransmitterCore Skills

You recognize the deeper inquiry running through what you create and allow each piece to strengthen a larger, coherent contribution.

06

Practices to Deepen the Gift

These practices cultivate the gift, tend its shadow and strengthen the conditions your work requires.

Tune the Instrument

Begin the workday by noticing the condition of the instrument through which the work moves: your body. Ask yourself... What is the quality of the instrument today? What does it need before I ask it to transmit?

Use one of the practices that reliably helps clear your channel. This might be breathwork, movement, water, sound, prayer, silence, rest or time in the living world. Pay attention to what helps you recognize genuine inspiration and notice when you are forcing an idea. Choose one or two practices and make them part of your regular creative rhythm, especially before beginning a new piece of work.

Your Archetypal Family:The Living Transmission Triad

Storyteller-Mythmaker+Inspirator+Transmitter

The Living Transmission Triad understands that culture is shaped by what moves from one person to another through story, beauty, resonance and embodied wisdom.

01

Storyteller-Mythmaker

The Storyteller-Mythmaker gives experience language and meaning.

They help people recognize the stories shaping what they believe is possible.

02

Inspirator

The Inspirator awakens aliveness and beauty.

They help people feel what is precious enough to love, protect and create.

03

Transmitter

As a Transmitter, you give lived insight a form that can travel.

Your body of work carries teachings and creative transmissions into other people's lives.

You may carry aspects of all three. Pay attention to what wants to move through you. Does it arrive as story and meaning, as a current of beauty and inspiration or as a body of work asking to be transmitted? Your primary medium is the body of work: lived insight given a form that can enter other people's lives.

Synthesizer+Ancient Futurist

Your archetypal family includes the archetypes who share your underlying orientation. Your strongest complementary collaborators may come from within that family or from a different family altogether.

Archetypal family: Who shares your underlying orientation?

Collaborators: Whose abilities create the strongest working chemistry with yours?

Each archetype carries a different set of strengths, and none of us is meant to do this work alone. Your strongest collaborators bring abilities that complement your own, allowing you to accomplish together what neither of you could accomplish in quite the same way alone. Together, you become more than the sum of your parts.

01

Transmitter

You shape insight into a coherent body of work.

02

Synthesizer

The Synthesizer locates it within a larger map of ideas and systems.

03

Ancient Futurist

The Ancient Futurist connects it to long memory and to the emerging conditions it may help shape.

Together, you create a transmission that is conceptually coherent, historically rooted and alive to the future.

Additional Collaborators

01

Wisdom Carrier

They protect the lineage and teachings feeding the work; you metabolize what you have received into a new transmission.

02

Storyteller

You build the body of work. The Storyteller carries its meaning through narrative and cultural memory.

03

Space Holder

Your teaching needs conditions in which it can be received. The Space Holder creates the container that helps it land.

04

Disruptor

The Disruptor opens a break in the old pattern. You offer the new understanding that can move through the opening.

09

Living Expressions: Embodied Examples of This Archetype

These modern-day Transmitters show what can emerge when a lifetime of inquiry is developed into a coherent teaching, methodology or field of study.

01 / 17
Wayne Dyer: Created a decades-long body of books, lectures, public television programs and teachings on purpose, intention and the inner life. His transmission often came through the coherence and presence with which he spoke as much as through any single idea.
Additional notes

Several also carry Wisdom Carrier, Storyteller, or Healer medicine. They appear here because a singular, devoted body of work became the vessel through which new frameworks, practices, and states of consciousness could reach others.
